Topeng means "mask" in Indonesian and usually implies a mask dance. The dancer portrays the character the mask represents - their body language, attitude, and all expression flows from the spirit of the mask. The Setia Darma House of Mask and Puppets near Ubud in Bali has an amazing collection of masks and puppets, from throughout Indonesia as well as other parts of the world. Here are some of them, mostly from Bali and Java which I really wanted to have photos of. If you want to learn the characters in Balinese art or indeed the Ramayana or the Mahabharata, their masks are not a bad place to start to get to know these characters.
