Malioboro Road was always the place to stay in “Yogya” along the backpacker trail through S.E. Asia. I stayed there in ‘82, Teresa and I in ‘87, and Teresa and Julius in 2008.

This time though I wanted to stay near the Kraton (Sultan’s Palace) to make it easier to attend cultural events there. You might have seen other posts from some of the dance events we saw there. Also, it seemed easier to find a guesthouse of old Javanese architecture and vibe. Since the palace used to sprawl even more than it does today, there are dwellings once part of the Kraton but outside its boundaries now. We found such a place to stay that didn’t disappoint in its mix of (some) modern convenience and old Javanese style.

But still, I was curious about the scene on Jalan Malioboro in 2024. Teresa was busy with Karen sorting out her reservations, so I took a Grab (like Uber) over there to do some recording. I took some photos and video as well, which is what we have below, including a couple old buildings in our neighborhood before I got in the Grab.

The two above are a couple of guesthouses in our neighborhood that I noted for next time.
